COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Blue & Gray (2-5) defeated Fordham (4-3) in three sets, 25-14, 25-19, 25-17. Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) and Elizabeth Riggins (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) both recorded 10 kills while Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) tallied 12 digs. The Hoyas lost their second match of the day to Maryland 3-0. The set scores were 25-15, 25-23, 25-17.
Starting strong, GU took control in the first set against Fordham, winning five of the first six points. GU did not allow Fordham to score more than two points consecutively. Samantha Trauth (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and Lindsay Wise (Raleigh, N.C./Raleigh Charter) notched four kills each as the Hoyas hit .375 with only one attacking error in the set, which ended 25-14.
The second set against Fordham began much like the first, with the Blue & Gray taking six of the first seven points on two kills from Wise and errant play from the Rams. Up 24-19, Riggins put away her fifth kill of the set to end the match at 25-19. Robinson also tallied five kills and Wise hit .400 in the set.
Georgetown had to overcome a 3-0 deficit to begin the third set. Kills from Riggins and Trauth put the Hoyas up 7-6 and the squad never looked back. Trauth finished the set, 25-17, and the match with an ace. Robinson and Riggins finished the match with 10 kills each, followed closely by Wise with nine and Trauth with seven.
"The players were really disciplined and followed the game plan," Head Coach Arlisa Williams said of the Hoyas win over Fordham. "We were able to serve competitively and stay disciplined against Fordham, which was the difference between the first and second matches."
The Hoyas could not continue that winning play into their next match against Maryland. GU overcame a 17-11 deficit to tie the second set at 22 and 23 before falling, 25-23. The Georgetown squad could not gain momentum in the first or third sets, falling 25-15 and 25-17 respectively. Rezin tallied 11 digs while Robinson recorded 11 kills and Wise hit .333 on the match.
The Hoyas play their first home match of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 8 against Howard at 7 p.m. in McDonough Arena.
