Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown volleyball squad (3-5) used its powerful offense to beat the Howard Bison (1-7) in straight sets. The Hoyas recorded a .387 hitting percentage in the match, a season-high. Brooke Bachesta (Sammamish, Wash./Eastside Catholic) notched nine kills and a .600 hitting percentage, while Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) tallied 11 kills and Elizabeth Riggins (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) had eight. The set scores were 25-17, 25-13, 25-17.

"It was an outstanding game as far as hitting is concerned," said Head Coach Arlisa Williams. "We weren't as disciplined as I would have liked but, all in all, we won and we're happy."

After giving up the first point in the match, the Hoyas rebounded and scored five in a row to go up 5-1. A kill from Riggins and an attacking error by Howard ended the first set at 25-13. Bachesta notched five kills in the set, while Robinson and Riggins added four each.

With the second set tied at seven, kills by Samantha Trauth (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and Annalee Abell (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) gave the Hoyas the lead, 9-7, which they would not give up. Trauth served the last five points of the set, which included three service aces, and a kill from Robinson to end the set at 25-17. Robinson led the team with five kills in the second set.

The Blue & Gray earned the first three points of the third set and did not look back. Trauth again served out the set with two service aces, putting the final set at 25-17. Abell and Riggins led the offense in the third set with three kills each.

At the end of the match, Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) tallied 11 digs while Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) notched 27 assists and 12 digs, giving her the eleventh double-double of her career and third this season.

The Hoyas return to action this weekend at the Blackbird Invitational in Brooklyn, N.Y. GU plays Long Island at 4 p.m. on Sept. 10 and Yale at 12:30 p.m. and NJIT at 3 p.m. on Sept. 11.
