WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad will travel to Louisville, Ky., on Tuesday to take on the University of Louisville Cardinals at 7 p.m. at KFC Yum! Center. Additionally, sophomore Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday after a 2-0 week. The Blue & Gray is 17-5 overall and 5-3 in BIG EAST play.
Georgetown defeated its second top-ten opponent of the season on Tuesday with a 65-60 victory over No. 8/8 West Virginia at McDonough Arena. It was the Mountaineers second loss of the season. The Hoyas then downed Seton Hall on Saturday in a 59-41 victory.
Junior Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) led the Blue & Gray in both points and rebounds with 14 points and nine boards. Rodgers and junior Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) both added 13 points while senior Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. Crawford managed three steals as well. Junior Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) and Rodgers both added five assists.
Georgetown shot 39.0 percent and outrebounded the Pirates, 41-27. The defense also forced SHU into 18 turnovers on four steals, but committed 16 turnovers on offense.
Rodgers leads the Hoyas with 18.3 points per game and 45 steals. She is also averaging 5.0 rebounds per game to lead the squad and is just ahead of Crawford who is averaging 4.6 rpg along with 6.9 ppg. Wright has recorded a team-high 115 assists on the season and is GU's fourth-leading scorer averaging 7.4 ppg behind McNutt and Magee who are managing 11.3 and 8.4 ppg, respectively.
On Monday, Rodgers was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for the second time this season. She averaged 21.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 4.0 apg in a 2-0 week. Rodgers scored a career-high 30 points in the Hoyas' win over No. 8/8 West Virginia. She shot 60 percent from the field (9-of-15) and connected on 10-of-10 from the line against the Mountaineers. In Georgetown's win at Seton Hall, Rodgers had 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, to go along with five assists and four rebounds.
Louisville is 14-8 this year and 5-3 in the BIG EAST. The Cardinals downed Rutgers at home, 56-45, last Saturday. Monique Reid led the team with 17 points, while Tia Gibbs grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Two UofL players scored in double figures in the win.
Reid leads Louisville with 16.4 points per game, she is followed closely by Shoni Schimmel who is averaging 16.0 ppg. Keisha Hines is averaging 6.2 rpg to top the squad.
The Hoyas are 1-4 all-time against the Cardinals. Last season, the Blue & Gray downed Louisville, 60-55, at McDonough Arena. Rodgers led Georgetown with 13 points, while McNutt had 11 and Jaleesa Butler posted eight points along with a squad-best nine rebounds.
GU had 12 steals on 30 forced turnovers. The last meeting in Louisville was during the 2007-08 season when the Hoyas fell, 65-51. Georgetown is 0-2 all-time on the road against Louisville.
