WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed announced today that Mary Mattson has been named Head Women's Golf Coach.
Mattson served as an assistant coach for the Hoyas during the Fall of 2010 and joined the program last summer. She takes over for Patty Post, who left in December to pursue another opportunity.
"I'm very happy to have Mary take the step up to lead our program during this period of transition," Reed said. "She's an accomplished player who had a tremendous collegiate career and she developed a strong relationship with our student-athletes during her first semester here. We're confident that she will be successful leader for our program."
Georgetown posted four top-10 finishes during the fall season, including a fourth place finish at the Princeton Invitational. The team was led by juniors Joan Dulieu (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and Eunae Jo (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood).
"This is a great opportunity for me and I'm excited to lead this team," Mattson said. "We have a strong nucleus of players and I'm thankful to Lee and the administration for their confidence in me."
Mattson came to the Hilltop after a standout collegiate career at Campbell University in North Carolina, where she helped lead the Camels to an NCAA Tournament appearance as a senior.
She capped off a brilliant career when she was named a unanimous First Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection in 2010. Mattson finished among the top-10 individuals at each of the last four Atlantic Sun Championship tournaments as CU placed first in 2007, second in both 2008 and 2009 and third in 2010 in the team race.
A native of Ijamsville, Md., Mattson was ranked number 148 in the final Golfstat Cup ratings with a 75.0 stroke average. She won twice in 2009-10, first at the UNC-Greensboro Starmount Fall Classic and then at the Fighting Camel Classic. In addition, she was runner-up at the Furman Lady Paladin Invitational and finished fifth at the A-Sun Championship.
Mattson set a school record for lowest 36-hole score at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic, where she shot 71-69 in the first two rounds. Mattson is one of only 17 women's golfers in A-Sun history to be named all-league all four years. She finished tied for 23rd in the nation in fairways hit (.850).
Mattson was a standout scholastic player at Urbana High School in Maryland and finished second in the state 3-A championships in 2006. Also a standout basketball player in high school, Mattson earned her bachelor's degree in business at Campbell.
