Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson III
On not getting shots down the stretch...
That, in many ways is uncharacteristic. We had the one possession where Chris dropped it to Julian and it went out of bounds. Jason went in the lane and whatever happened there happened there. Third possession we tried to get an isolation for Austin on the side, I thought he was fouled, but we ended up losing that one. We had chances, we had opportunities, but it did not work out the way we wanted them to.
On if the loss was due to the physicality of the game...
It was a typical BIG EAST game. I don't know, it would be easy to sit here and say that's just how the ball bounces. We're in a place where we don't want to be right now. Everyone in that locker room from myself on down has to figure out how to get us out of this place. We're the same group of guys who were in there two or three weeks ago and now we just have to find out how to get back there.
On the disparities in rebounding and free throw attempts...
I don't know the answer to (why opponents are getting to the free throw line more), we're fouling more is the easy answer to that question. (Rebounding) is an issue that has been addressed, that's an issue that will be addressed, that's something that we have to take care of. You go through twenty or thirty seconds of a good defense without the understanding that the possession ends when you get the ball instead of when the shot is taken. That is something that needs to be addressed.
On Austin Freeman not scoring in the first half...
We made a conscious effort to get him more shots and more touches in the second half.
On if this loss makes Wednesday's Pittsburgh game more important...
There's no doubt about that. The good thing is we're four games into an eight game season. The bad news is we've lost three of those four games. This is the BIG EAST, so no game gets any easier. Does that put a heightened sense of urgency on the Pittsburgh game? Absolutely.
On getting back to where they were two weeks ago...
In the nature of your questions is the answer to your questions. We were doing a much better job rebounding than we are right now. We were doing a better job of reading and making the right decisions offensively, where as now their has been some slippage.
Georgetown Players
Junior Guard Jason Clark
On Georgetown's last possession...
I drove to the basket when I should have been running the play that we designed. I saw something different and I didn't see that drift that was open. Austin was open I should have made the extra pass.
On Georgetown's turnovers down the stretch...
It hurt us a lot. We had plays designed, we wanted to get up good shots, but we turned it over and that didn't allow us to get shots.
On the rebounding disparity...
It's effort. We have to do better, we have to want it more than the other team.
Senior, Guard, Chris Wright
On trying to shoot his way out of a slump...
It's frustrating, but it's part of the game and I have to continue to be myself and be a leader. It's more than just shooting. Me and (Jason and Austin) need to get down there and get rebounds. Our confidence, as a team is down because of the way we've lost these last two games, but we have to stay together. We have good enough players were we need to come out of this and we're going to be all right. We just have to focus and stick to what we know and stick to our game plan offensively and defensively.
On West Virginia's defense late in the game...
It was a man-to-man, but one guy was left open and John Flowers was sitting in the middle of the lane. We tried to recognize it, tried to stay with our stuff regardless of what they were doing, but they threw a little gimic at us and it paid off.
Senior Guard, Austin Freeman
On his play from the first half to the second half...
In the first half I wasn't as aggressive as I was in the second half. I played pretty passive in the first half, but in the second half I was more aggressive and tried to get myself and my teammates looks. It's something I can't do, my teammates need me to be aggressive and get my shot and help them get their shots, so it's on my part.
On Casey Mitchell...
He's a really good shooter and knows how to get his shot off and Coach Huggins ran some stuff where he could get some easy buckets. He's a really good player.
West Virginia Player Quotes
Casey Mitchell
"Coaches tell me I need to be more athletic and get steals, I don't worry about scoring just get the rebounds. "
Q: How tough was the adjustment from last year to this year?
A: "A lot of people called me about transferring. And I just stayed with them, kept focused on what I needed and wanted to do."
Cam Thoroughman
"With a collective team effort we were able to take the ball and guide it here we needed to."
Q: With the end of the game and four turnovers, how do you feel you contributed to the end result today?
A: "We've been working on rotations and coach has been talking about helping your teammates and that's just what we've tried to do. We look at the top 25 and you start looking at your resume and you're 1-3 it doesn't look good, but when you are 2-2 and get a road win against a great team like Georgetown it makes a huge difference. Now we want to go home continue that and keep winning games."
Kevin Jones
"We're getting back to the point where everyone is having fun. "
Q: "You kept saying We're Back by the end of the game, over and over, what does that mean?"
A: "It means that we're finally starting to do what we are wanting to do. The maturity that we need to be in the league, is important. We're defending Big East Champs, , we need to keep in the mindset of playing like we're down and keep fighting to the very end and I think we proved it today."
