WASHINGTON - The No. 19 Georgetown University men's soccer squad battled, but couldn't overcome rain, snow, sleet and the Providence University Friars (10-6-1, 5-3-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field as the Hoyas fell, 2-1, in the regular season finale. Georgetown closed out the regular season with a record of 10-4-4 overall and a mark of 5-3-1 in league play.

GU's conference record had already clinched a BIG EAST Tournament berth with the seeding to be announced on Monday.

"Both teams were out there doing it, but to Providence's credit they just worked harder than us in the first half," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We let in two uncharacteristically soft goals and you can't do that against a team like Providence and expect to get a result."

In a game with flurries, it was a flurry of goals over a seven-minute span that made the difference.

The Hoyas scored in the eighth minute off of a brilliant goal from junior forward Andy Riemer (McLean, Va./Georgetown Prep). The ball was served in off of a free kick and the Friars looked to clear it, but Riemer managed to disrupt the clear and fire back a perfect bicycle kick to make it 1-0.

The lead didn't last long, however, as the Friars countered in the 12th minute for the equalizer as John Raley passed to Greg Davis who beat the defender and fired into the upper right corner of the net to make it 1-1.

Just three minutes later, Providence scored to go-ahead goal on a tough defensive play for Georgetown. The first shot was saved by GU keeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) and the second was cleared by a Hoya defender, but didn't go far enough as Marcos Ugarte fired a third shot into the open net to make it 2-1 which would stand for the remainder of the contest.

Georgetown had opportunities in the second half, the best coming late in the game when sophomore forward Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) headed in a ball that hit the post and ricocheted out of the net after beating the keeper. Unfortunately, the chances were too little, too late as the Blue & Gray fell, 2-1.

"Once we were down, I think the guys came out and played hard, they put forth an extraordinary effort," said Wiese. "But we generated a couple chances and their goalie made some good saves and we just ran out of time."

The Hoyas outshot the Friars. 12-10, but Providence took four corners to the Georgetown's three which all came in the second half. Gomez tallied two saves in the game and PC keeper Jhojan Obando posted five stops for the game.

The Hoyas have already clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament and will wait for the seeding to be announced on Monday afternoon following the final conference game of the season. Tournament play will begin on Wednesday at campus sites.
