WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team suffered a tough loss to the DePaul University Blue Demons Friday evening at Army Navy Country Club. The 5-1 decision drops the Hoyas to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST play.

The squads agreed to begin with singles play as the Hoyas won the first match of the evening. Vicky Sekely (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) at No. 2 singles downed Selma Salkovia 6-2, 6-2 in a huge win to give the Blue & Gray confidence.

Despite the momentum, Georgetown dropped the next three matches as DePaul took a 3-1 lead.

With the match still within reach, sophomore Samantha Martin (Manulis, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manulis) lost a heartbreaker 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 6. After losing the first set, she battled to get the second and force a third where she eventually fell.

While each match finished, No. 1 Stephanie Wetmore (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College) was playing in another three-set battle.

"Steph is one of the best competitors I have ever seen," said Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "She is a great example for our younger players."

DePaul's Katrina Milinkovic won the first set, 6-3, but Wetmore came roaring back to capture the second, 6-4. In the final set, Milinkovic managed the 6-3 victory in the almost three-hour match.

With the Blue Demons ahead, 5-1, the teams agreed to forgo doubles play as DePaul came away with the win.

The Hoyas will be back in action on Saturday as the squad hosts James Madison at Bell Haven Country Club at 4 p.m.
