Fifth-Seeded Hoyas Open NCAA Tournament on Sunday

March 19, 2011

WASHINGTON - The fifth-seeded Georgetown University women's basketball squad participated in the NCAA Tournament's media opportunity and open practice on Saturday as a lead up to Sunday's first-round matchup between the Hoyas and the 12th-seeded Princeton University Tigers at Comcast Center in College Park, Md. The Blue and Gray will tipoff against the Tigers at 2:30 p.m., on Sunday. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.

"We're very excited to be here today and to once again be in the NCAA Tournament," said Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "I think my team worked extremely hard this year and we knew one of the challenges was to get back to the NCAA Tournament, so I'm very proud of my young ladies for achieving that goal."

Georgetown is 22-10 overall after earning the eighth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to Connecticut; the Huskies went on to win the tourney. The Hoyas have been in the national rankings all season currently sitting at No. 23 in the AP Poll and No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Blue & Gray has had four wins over nationally-ranked opponents and two over top 10 opponents. The team has defeated six NCAA Tournament squads.

The Blue & Gray has been to the NCAA Tournament twice prior to this year. Last season, the Hoyas earned the fifth seed and played in Berkeley, Calif., defeating No. 12 Marist before falling to the No. 4 Baylor University Bears who eventually advanced to the Final Four.

During the 1992-93 season Georgetown earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid during Williams-Flournoy's first season as an assistant coach with the Hoyas. Georgetown fell in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament, but advanced to the Sweet 16 finishing the season with a record of 23-7.

The Tigers are 24-4 on the season and won the Ivy League to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, their second in as many years. Georgetown has faced Princeton twice in program history. The Hoyas are 1-1 all-time winning, 83-62, in 1996 but falling on the road, 71-44, during the 1997-98 season.

Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Comcast Center. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 with Bob Picozzi on the call and Rebecca Lobo doing color.

Fans can purchase tickets through the Georgetown Ticket Office by calling Pete Kirschner at 202-687-2182. Ticketholders will gain admittance to the noon game between No. 4 Maryland and No. 13 Saint Francis (Pa.) and GU's 2:30 p.m., matchup.
