WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore shooting guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) has been named Honorable Mention State Farm Coaches' All-America by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. The sophomore is one of just 40 players nationwide to be honored and one of only three sophomores.
Already this postseason, Rodgers has been named Honorable Mention All-America by the AP as well as a Second Team Division I Women's Basketball All-Star.
Rodgers led the Hoyas to one of their best seasons in program history with a record of 24-11 and a mark of 9-7 in BIG EAST play. Georgetown spent the entire season in the national rankings moving as high as No. 11 in the AP Poll and No. 12 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll.
The Blue & Gray finished the regular season tied for seventh in the BIG EAST earning the eighth seed in the conference tournament. Georgetown was awarded an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament receiving the five seed for the second-consecutive year. The Hoyas downed No. 12 Princeton in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before defeating local-rival No. 4 Maryland to earn the program's second trip to the Sweet 16.
Georgetown battled top-ranked Connecticut for the third meeting of the season in the round of 16 leading almost the entire game before eventually falling, 68-63.
The sophomore shooting guard has been a huge part of the Hoya turnaround over the past two seasons with an outstanding sophomore year. She led the squad in scoring averaging 18.7 ppg to also rank second in the conference. She was also proficient on the defensive end leading GU in steals with 90 and ranking second in rebounds averaging 4.9 rpg. Additionally, Rodgers was second on the team in assists with 85.
Rodgers scored in double figures in all games but two this season and led Georgetown in scoring 25 times as well as in rebounding ten times. As a sophomore she has already scored her 1,000th point and is the all-time leader for points in a season (653), three's in a season (96) and ranks among the top 15 on the all-time scoring list with 1,233.
The Suffolk, Va., native earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors twice this season and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on six occasions. Once again she was a First Team All-BIG EAST honoree on a unanimous decision in 2011. Rodgers is a finalist for the Wade Trophy and the Naismith Award as well as earning a spot on the final ballot for the WBCA State Farm All-America Team.
Rodgers is just the second Hoya in program history to earn a place on the AP All-America Team and the first to earn the distinction twice. Georgetown's only other All-American was Rebekkah Brunson who earned Honorable Mention as a senior in 2004. The WBCA honor marks Rodgers' first national award from the organization and the first in program history.
The sophomore was one of ten players from the BIG EAST to earn All-America.
