WASHINGTON - Georgetown University women's tennis student-athlete Stephanie Wetmore (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College) has been named All-BIG EAST the conference announced Wednesday afternoon. The graduate student is the first Georgetown women's tennis player to earn All-BIG EAST honors under Head Coach Gordie Ernst.
"I couldn't be more proud of Stephanie. She came to Georgetown, picked the team up on her back, and carried us to our best year ever," said Ernst. "She was a fantastic player and leader, but more importantly, even a better person. This award is only fitting to end such a fabulous career."
Wetmore went 25-9 on the season with a mark of 17-5 at No. 1 singles and a mark of 7-2 in BIG EAST matches. She finished the year with a five-match win streak and managed a victory in 10 of her final 11 matches including a 3-0 performance in the BIG EAST Tournament.
In doubles play, she was 21-4 overall including a record of 9-1 with partner Tina Tehrani and a mark of 8-2 with Lauren Greco. Greco and Wetmore were among the national ITA rankings this past season.
The team captain was an emotional leader for the Hoyas despite playing her first season on the Hilltop.
Wetmore joins 11 other student athletes on the all-conference squad and is the lone graduate student among the honorees.
The Hoyas placed sixth at the BIG EAST Tournament despite going into the championship as the eighth seed. GU moved into the final match after defeating fourth-seeded Louisville, 4-2, in the consolation bracket.
