WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team held its 2011 awards dinner with two student-athletes being honored. Head Coach Gordie Ernst and Assistant Coach Starr Foster presented the team's top honors following the 2011 season.
Graduate Student Stephanie Wetmore (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College) was named the team MVP after an outstanding season. She was the first player under Ernst to be named to the All-BIG EAST squad.
Wetmore went 25-9 on the year with a mark of 17-5 at No. 1 singles and a mark of 7-2 in BIG EAST matches. She finished the year with a five-match win streak and managed a victory in 10 of her final 11 matches including a 3-0 performance in the BIG EAST Tournament.
In doubles play, she was 21-4 overall including a record of 9-1 with partner Tina Tehrani and a mark of 8-2 with Lauren Greco. Greco and Wetmore were among the national ITA rankings this past season.
Freshman Michaela Rollings (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) earned the squad's Coaches Award for her efforts throughout the year. Despite her status as a rookie, Rollings was the consummate team player with a great attitude and dedication. Her attitude was infectious whether she was in the lineup or not.
Rollings showed a desire to improve and was a true student-athlete giving her all on the court and in the classroom. She went 3-4 in singles play for the season and was 4-1 in doubles. Rollings appeared in one conference match against Providence winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Blue & Gray posted its best season under Ernst with a 13-10 overall record and a mark of 7-2 in conference play. The Hoyas placed sixth at the BIG EAST Tournament despite going into the championship as the eighth seed. GU moved into the final match after defeating fourth-seeded Louisville, 4-2, in the consolation bracket.
