Hoyas Dorfman and vonArentschildt Enjoying Solid Summer Golf

July 26, 2011

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University men's golfers continue to perform well in summer events, with senior co-captain Brian Dorfman (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and sophomore Charlie vonArentschildt (Scottsdale, Ariz./Deerfield Academy [Mass.]) turning in a pair of solid performances recently.

Dorfman, who has played in every tournament since stepping foot on the Georgetown campus as a freshman in 2008, recently finished in a tie for 41st - and was the fifth amateur - in the Colorado Open, held at the Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.

The rising senior finished the 72-hole tournament with a score of 1-over par 285, with individual rounds of 1-over par 72, 2-under par 69, 5-over par 76 and 3-under par 68, respectively. Included in the second round 69 was a hole-in-one on the fifth hole (his 14th of the day), a 179-yard hole with the pin in the back left and the wind going left to right, on the 8-iron

"I played pretty well and there were only about nine amateurs who made the cut," Dorfman said. "I was pretty happy with it. I would have liked to have finished higher obviously. I had some good rounds in there, but I just had a bad nine holes. Other than that I was 6-under and I had a great time playing in it."

Dorfman's remaining schedule will include playing in a United States Amateur qualifier and in the Colorado State Amateur.

"Now that work is ending up, I'll be able to concentrate on my game a bit more," Dorfman said. "I'm going home next week and from that point, I'm going to just be practicing and playing until the start of the season. It's going to be a great year. We've got a lot of great things going on with this team."

VonArentschildt, meanwhile, had an outstanding performance in the Montana State Men's Amateur this past weekend. Coming off what he termed as a poor outing in the Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship, the rising sophomore was looking to bounce back.

He did that in grand fashion, firing a 17-under par 271 and breaking the state amateur record, but fell short of winning the title as the tournament winner was four strokes better to claim the title. VonArentschildt posted rounds of 3-under par 68 in the first, second and fourth rounds, respectively, with a 5-under par 67 in the third round.

"If you told me I'd shoot four rounds in the 60s - 68 was my number this week - I'd have been extraordinarily happy," VonArentschildt told The Missoulian newspaper in Montana. "I did make a little bit of a charge. I keep telling people it seems just like last year, because there were a lot of moments where, I'm not saying I got close, but there were a lot of moments I could've got closer."

In the third round, as eventual winner, 30-year-old Nathan Bailey, appeared ready to open a lead after three rounds, VonArentschildt would not let him get far away. He fired a 5-under par 67 in the third round, including seven birdies on the front nine.

"I seemed to figure something out after the TransMiss when preparing (for the Montana Am)," vonArentschildt said via e-mail. "It translated into a pretty nice tournament which, unfortunately, ended in a second-straight runner-up. I am very happy with my play at this point and am ready for my next event."

That next event will be competing in the Arizona Amateur, which will be held from August 1-6 at the Country Club at DC Ranch in Scottsdale.
