WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's volleyball team went to Harrisonburg, Va. to participate in the Coca-Cola Classic in their final preseason tournament, and opened up with an emphatic win against the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Georgetown took all three sets by scores of 25-22, 27-25 and 25-23.
The Hoyas came out and took the game with a sense of purpose and forcefulness. After dropping their final game of the DC Challenge to George Washington, and going 1-2 in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic hosted by no. 1-ranked University of California, the Hoyas were looking for a spark to get their season back on track and become re-acclimated with the style of volleyball they're accustomed to.
Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) tallied 34 assists, five service aces, six digs and three kills on the night. Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) had two service aces and seven digs on the night, providing a solid defensive effort and getting back into the groove of the game.
Lindsay Wise (Raleigh, N.C./Raleigh Charter) recorded seven kills, 2 digs, a block solo and a .308 hitting percentage on the night. Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) recorded nine kills, two digs and a .308 hitting percentage.
The Hoyas out-killed, out-dug, out-assisted and out-blocked the Mountaineers by significant margins, which was the necessary impetus for the players and coaching staff to get the season back on track, close out their final preseason effort with a win, and come back to McDonough Arena for BIG EAST conference.
The Hoyas compete against tournament host James Madison tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., and will go up against East Tennessee State University at 5 p.m. to end the Coca-Cola Classic.
