Final Stats
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team went 2-0 this past weekend to improve to 2-1 overall in the early part of the spring season. One Friday, the Blue & Gray blanked Liberty University, 7-0. The next day, the Hoyas downed James Madison University, 6-1, to pick up the second win of the year.
Against Liberty, the Hoyas won in straight sets in all six singles matches. Sophomore transfer Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Philips Exeter Academy) started it out with the 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3. This was followed by senior Lauren Greco (Oakmont, Pa./Shady Side Academy) getting the 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 and junior Vicky Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) winning at No. 4, 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 5, sophomore Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2 and at No. 2, sophomore Tina Tehrani (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) managed the 6-3, 6-2 win. Rounding out singles play was freshman Sophia Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) at No. 6 who posted the 6-0, 6-3 victory.
In doubles play, it was a quick finish for the Hoyas. The No. 2 pair of Tehrani and Sekely won, 8-1, while the No. 1 pair of Greco and Comolli nabbed the doubles point with the 8-2 decision. At No. 3, Jaeger and Panarese win, 8-6.
On Saturday, James Madison proved a tougher test. Comolli started it out winning at No. 3 (6-2, 6-1) as Jaeger followed that up with a No. 5 victory, 6-0, 6-2. No. 2 Tehrani made it 3-0 with the 6-2, 6-1 decision, but JMU bounced back taking the No. 4 point.
Greco at No. 1 and Panarese at No. 6 sealed it for the Hoyas as they won, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 and 7-6(6), 6-1, in three-set battles.
Georgetown picked up the doubles point with No. 1 and No. 2 winning. Sekely and Tehrani finished first at No. 2 with the 8-2 decision, while the pair of Greco and Comolli nabbed the 8-5 victory at No. 1.
The Hoyas will travel to the University of Pittsburgh next weekend for their first BIG EAST Conference competition.
