WASHINGTON - The No. 6/8 Georgetown University men's soccer team will continue BIG EAST Blue Division Conference play on Wednesday afternoon as the squad travels to Providence College for a 3 p.m., kickoff at Glay Field. The Hoyas are currently 12-2-1 overall and 3-2-0 in BIG EAST play.
On Saturday, the Blue & Gray defeated No. 4/2 Marquette University, 2-1, at North Kehoe Field. Senior defender Tommy Muller (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) scored the first goal off of a header, but the Golden Eagles tied it in the 35th minute. Junior forward Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) put in the game winner in the 50th minute to give GU the victory and hand the Golden Eagles their first loss of the 2012 campaign. It was the Hoyas' third top ten opponent in four games.
On Monday, Neumann was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and Muller earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Neumann scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 non-conference win against Lehigh University on Tuesday. He followed that up with the game winner against Marquette while also assisting on the Hoyas' first goal. The award marked Neumann's and the Hoyas' first offensive player of the week honor of the season and the forward's second total award after earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on August 28. It is Neumann's first-career recognition as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week.
Muller played a major role in the Hoya defense posting a 2-0 shutout against Lehigh on Tuesday. Not only did the defense allow just one goal on the week, but Muller scored his first goal of the 2012 campaign in the Marquette win. It marked his fourth-career goal. It was his first nod to the BIG EAST Honor Roll and the sixth this year for the Blue & Gray.
On Saturday, junior Wilder Arboleda led the Friars (3-7-2, 1-3-0 BIG EAST) to their first BIG EAST win of the season with a three-goal performance. He tied the game, 1-1, at 65:35 and then sent the game to overtime when he netted another equalizer in the 85th minute. At 93:12, Arboleda headed home a Thomas Ballenthin cross to give the Friars the win.
For the season, Arboleda leads the squad in both goals (6) and points (13). Senior Keith Jecewiz is second in both categories with three goals and seven points. Junior Brian Grisell leads the team with three assists. In the net, sophomore Keasel Broome has played the majority of the minutes, posting a 1.38 GAA, 27 saves, a .659 save percentage and a 2-5-2 record.
Georgetown is 11-12-1 all-time against the Friars, and 2-5 all-time under Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. Last year, the Hoyas fell, 2-1, in Washington, D.C. in a rainy game at Multi-Sport Field. In the last meeting in Rhode Island, the Blue & Gray won, 1-0, with Neumann tallying the game winner in the 43rd minute.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Glay Field. Live stats will be available through the Providence athletic website.
