WASHINGTON - Georgetown University men's soccer sophomore goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) and freshman forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Jospeh's) were both named BIG EAST Conference Players of the Week on Monday with Gomez being earning the top goalkeeper spot and Allen winning rookie of the week. Additionally, senior defender Tommy Muller (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) and classmate Jimmy Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) were both named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.
Gomez posted two shutouts last week, making eight saves as the Hoyas went 2-0 to defeat Seton Hall twice and secure a share of the Blue Division regular-season title. The Hoyas posted a 2-0 win on Wednesday and a 1-0 victory on Saturday. In both contests he was forced to come up with multiple game-winning stops.
This is Gomez's first goalkeeper of the week honor this season and his second-career weekly award. The sophomore is leading the squad with 43 saves and six shutouts on the year.
Allen scored two goals in a 2-0 week for the Hoyas. He had the late gamewinner against Seton Hall on Saturday in a 1-0 win and scored the insurance goal in a 2-0 victory on Wednesday.
Allen is currently leading the Hoyas with 11 goals and on the season as well as a team-best 24 points. This is his third-career weekly honor from the conference.
Muller and Nealis were honored after anchoring a backline that posted a pair of shutouts. Muller played a key role in the clean sheets, while Nealis added an assist.
Georgetown finished the regular season with a mark of 15-2-1 overall and 6-2 in conference play. It was their second league title in three seasons and the third in program history. The Hoyas have already surpassed the most wins under Head Coach Brian Wiese and the most since 1998.
With Saturday's victory, the Hoyas tied Connecticut for the league title and earned the No. 2 seed from the Blue Division in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Blue & Gray will have a first-round bye in the tournament and will play on Saturday, November 3 against St. John's, the No. 3 seed in the Red Division, at North Kehoe Field at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will move on to the semifinals on November 9 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.
