Women's Tennis Goes 1-1 on the Weekend

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team went 1-1 this past weekend with matches on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Georgetown fell to the No. 60 College of William & Mary by a score of 5-2, but the Hoyas bounced back with the 5-2 victory over Old Dominion University on Saturday. The Blue & Gray is now 4-2 on the season.

In doubles play against ODU, the Hoyas quickly picked up the point as the No. 3 pair of freshman Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) and junior Alexandra Landers (Teaneck, N.J./Immaculate Heart) won by a score of 8-4. The No. 2 pair of junior Vicky Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) and sophomore Tina Tehrani (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) followed with the 8-4 victory as Georgetown went ahead, 1-0.

Old Dominion battled back to win at No. 1 and No. 2 and take a 2-1 lead. However, the Hoyas came on strong and won the final four matches to pick up the victory. No. 3 sophomore Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Philips Exeter Academy) downed Juliana Pires, 6-4, 6-4. Sekely then came back from a 6-0 loss in the first set to win the final two 6-3, 6-2 making the score 3-1.

Panarese clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Faith Atiso at No. 6 and sophomore Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) made the final score 5-2 with a 7-5, 5-7, 11-9 three-set victory.

On Friday, Georgetown fell to No. 60 William & Mary, 5-2. After losing the doubles point, Panarese tied it at one with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6, but the Tribe would come back. The other Hoya victory came from No. 4 Sekely who toughed out a 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 three-set victory.

Three of the six singles matches against the Tribe went to three sets.

Panarese had a big weekend going 4-0 on the weekend with two doubles victories and a pair of wins in singles play.

Georgetown will be back in action on Thursday at Rutgers in a BIG EAST matchup scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
