Hoyas Sail Well at Two Tough Events

Feb. 28, 2012

Bob Bavier Team Race @ College of Charleston

4th of 10 (16-11 record)

The Hoyas were greeted with chilly temperatures, several knots of current, and times of big breeze upon arriving at the College of Charleston sailing center on the Cooper River.  Many of the top teams in the country were on hand to make for a competitive set of races.  The team had great boatspeed and boathandling, and adjusted well to the difficult conditions and unique courses.

Big wins over regional competition like St Mary's College and Navy speak to the past few weeks of good practice, but several losses to the top three finishers at the event demonstrate the necessary improvements that the group has to make.  This was certainly a good early season result for the group and gives them a lot of motivation over the next couple of weekends.

Tom Noble Team Race @ Washington College

3rd of 8 (5-2 record)

Tough, windy conditions made for challenging racing at the Tom Noble Team Race held this past weekend at Washington College.  Several teams from New England added to the high level of competition.  Most of Saturday's racing was postponed due too much wind.  Sunday's races were held in times of heavy current and variable winds, which led to some significant changes throughout each race.  The team learned a lot from this event and will certainly use it to springboard into the next couple of weeks.

The Georgetown Sailing Team will be competing this coming weekend at the Charleston Spring Women's Regatta at the College of Charleston and the Graham Hall Team Race at the US Naval Academy before heading to Charleston, SC for Spring Break practices
