WASHINGTON - Georgetown University women's basketball junior guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association's Midseason Watch List on Thursday marking a first in her impressive career on the Hilltop. The shooting guard was featured a week ago on the Wooden Midseason Top 20.
Rodgers has led the No. 14/13 Hoyas (19-5, 8-3 BIG EAST) in points in 19 of 24 games so far this season with a high of 39 points in the win over Dartmouth University at the Blue Sky Classic. She is averaging 19.9 ppg to lead the BIG EAST, 5.5 rpg to rank third on the team and has a squad-high 59 steals. Rodgers also shoots a squad-high 82.0 percent from the free throw line and ranks second in assists with 43.
She has earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors on three occasions this season and had five total nods to the honor roll as well.
Rodgers was one of only seven juniors to earn a spot on the prestigious list as well as only one of seven players from the BIG EAST Conference.
The USBWA considers the 20 student-athletes to be leading contenders to be named to the USBWA's All-America Team and as finalists for the Women's National Player of the Year award, although all Division I players remain eligible for postseason honors from the USBWA.
The association will announce its 2012 All-America Team in mid-March. At that time, finalists will also be chosen for the player of the year. Once finalists are announced, the entire USBWA membership will vote for the winner of the National Player of the Year.
Since the 1987-88 season, the USBWA has named a Women's National Player of the Year and it has selected a women's All-America team since the 1996-97 season. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball.
Georgetown will be back in action on Saturday, February 11 as the team hits the road to take on the No. 3/3 University of Connecticut Huskies at Gampel Pavilion. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on regional sports networks including MASN and SNY as part of the BIG EAST package with Bob Picozzi and LaChina Robinson on the call.
Live stats will also be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
