Sailing Wins Another Women's Conference Championship

April 24, 2012

MAISA Spring Women's Championship: 1st of 12 w/60 points

A Div: 1st w/21 pts - Sydney Bolger / Rebecca Evans

B Div: 1st w/39 pts - Nancy Hagood, Amanda Taselaar / Tory Lynch, Katia DaSilva

The number one ranked Georgetown Women's Sailing Team won their Spring conference championship in decisive fashion this weekend at the event hosted by Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Sunny and warm with gusty breeze on Saturday gave way to chilly rain on Sunday, but the team was able to fend off the efforts of rival Navy to maintain a significant lead through the end of the event. In A Division, All-Americans Sydney Bolger and Rebecca Evans continued their domination of the women's college circuit posting just 21 points over the 12 race series, which included a stretch of nine race wins in a row. This result also qualified the Hoya Women for the ICSA Women's National Championship in Austin, TX May 31-June 2 where they hope to maintain their season of success.

Admiral's Cup: 3rd of 19 w/350 points

A Div: 1st w/85 pts - Chris Barnard / Hilary Kenyon, Teddy Mark

B Div: 2nd w/106 pts - Evan Aras / Kate Canty, Teddy Mark

C Div: 7th w/159 pts - Matt Gowell

At the Admiral's Cup Regatta, hosted by USMMA-King's Point, the Hoyas had another good event, bringing together impressive performances from Chris Barnard, Hilary Kenyon, and Teddy Mark in A-Division with top 10 scores in B and C. This event, one of the few to feature a Laser Division in the spring, had many of the top twenty ranked teams in the country and Georgetown was the only team to stay under 200 points in the combination of A and B divisions. Breezy conditions on Saturday combined with unusually mild current allowed the team to excel in flat water, and Sunday's cold temperatures with rain did not stop the team from maintaining its position near the top of the leader board.

Arrigan Memorial Regatta:

3rd of 7 w/184 points

A Div: 2nd w/86 pts - Andrew Mason / Kelly Meyering

B Div: 3rd w/98 pts - Tristan Berne / Katie Olsen

5th of 7 w/229 points

A Div: 3rd w/89 pts - Peter Johns / Eliana Michaels

B Div: 6th w/140 pts - Lincoln Heilner / Alyse Brehm

Georgetown Sailing also hosted its annual Arrigan Memorial Regatta this weekend, named in memoriam of Robert Arrigan, and finished in 3rd and 5th with its two squads. Beautiful southerly winds and temperatures in the mid to upper 70s on Saturday allowed the regatta to be completed in one day, with all fourteen races being sailed by 4 pm. The Arrigan's were in attendance again this year and saw the team sail well in several races. Both groups struggled at times to consistently read the shifts on the racecourse, a fact evidenced by the high level of variation in the scores. However, this event brings together several of the top teams in the Middle Atlantic Conference for tight, competitive races at the end of the season, and the overall scores among all seven teams present were fairly close.

Hoya Sailing now takes a short break for Study Days and Exams but will return to action at the ICSA Coed National Semi-Finals at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD on May 12-13. The team will need to finish in the top 9 at that event to move onto the National Championships in Austin, Texas. The Team Race and Women's Teams have both already secured their Nationals berths.
