Georgetown Volleyball Wins in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - In set one, Campbell won the match's first four points, and would hold a 6-1 advantage early on. The Hoyas then struck back to tie it at 14, and neither team would lead by more than a single point until the last point of the set, when Campbell emerged 26-28.

"We started off a little slow, but I'm very proud of the way we persevered," said head coach Arlisa Williams.

Sophomore middle blocker Dani White had a tremendous all around performance with match-highs of 18 kills, a .571 hitting percentage, and seven blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Alex Johnsonwas also a strong contributor, racking up 11 kills and 11 digs.

The back and forth continued in set two, with GU able to pull it out 25-23.

The Hoyas then exploded out of the gate in set three to take an 11-1 lead. The strong start proved too much to overcome for Campbell, as Goergetown would win the set 25-8. Junior outside hitter Brooke Bachestahad four of her match-high seven service aces in the set. Besides the third, each set was narrowly won by the minimum of two points.

In the fourth, the Hoyas did not let up. Trailing 20-23 late in the set, the Hoyas would win seven of the final nine points to win the match.

"I think the biggest thing is our defensive effort," said Williams. "They are a crafty team." The Hoyas had an 82-66 advantage in digs, including 25 from sophomore libero MacKenzie Simpson.

Campbell was led by outside hitter Jessica Groen with 11 kills and defensive specialist Lauren Bewick with 20 digs.

The Hoyas will play two more matches in the Tribe Invitational Saturday. They face Manhattan at 12:30 p.m. and take on host William & Mary at 7 p.m.
