The #1 Ranked Georgetown Coed sailing team started off with a bang taking 3 of the top 4 spots at the Navy Laser Regatta. Senior and 2012 College Sailor of the Year Chris Barnard easily won the regatta with an impressive string on top 3 races. Chris spent much of his summer training in the Laser and won the 2012 US North American Championship in July. Georgetown also had two of its most talented Freshman skippers competing as well. Greg Martinez, 2012 US Junior Laser Champion finished in second place 1 point ahead of Nevin Snow, 2011 US Junior Laser Champion. Greg excelled in the windy conditions on Day 1 and Nevin proved to be faster in the light air conditions on day 2. All three sailors now move on to compete at the Conference Singlehanded Championships in October where the top four finishers will qualify for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship.

The Georgetown Women's team started its season at Navy this weekend with the singlehanded qualifier for the conference championship. The top 12 sailors move on to the final round on September 21-22 and luckily for the Hoyas all three of their women made the finals. Nancy Hagood was the most consistent in all conditions showing an ability to hang tough in the high winds and finish top 5 when the wind was light and shifty. Lexi Coudert excelled in the windy conditions on Saturday making it as high as 4th overall but struggled a bit on Sunday and dropped to 10th. Madeline Higgins competing in her first college event started out the best of the three but a series of double digit finishes at the end of Saturday kept her out of the top 10.

The Riley Cup @ Old Dominion is the first doublehanded regatta of the season for the Hoyas. This year the Hoyas sent a young group of Sophomores and Freshman to ODU to compete against some of the best local teams. In A division Sophomores Alex and Katie started out well and had a number of top 5 races but had difficulty starting well and that hurt their overall results. In B Div. Freshmen Sean and Isabelle showed a great deal of improvement over the course of the weekend. Sailing in FJ's together for the first time the duo started out with some finishes around 6-10 but got better each race. They ended the regatta with five top 3 finishes including winning the last race.
This weekend the Hoyas will compete in three events.
