Nov. 16, 2013

Final Stats

CINCINATTI - The Georgetown volleyball team (10-18, 4-11 BIG EAST) dropped its fifth straight match Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) at Xavier in a BIG EAST match.

Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) led the Hoyas with a match-high 13 kills and hit at a .400 clip while Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) was also in double figures with 10 and also added seven digs. MacKenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) led all players in the match with 20 digs while Emily Gisolfi (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) added 13. Caitlin Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) had 31 assists and Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) and) had four total blocks.

The Hoyas jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the match, thanks to a kill from White who also teamed with Brauneis for a block. With the score tied at 10, Georgetown used another 3-0 run, behind two more kills from White and one from Johnson, to take a 13-10 lead. After another kill by Johnson gave the Hoyas an 18-17 lead, Xavier (20-9, 11-3 BIG EAST) responded with six consecutive points to take a late, commanding lead at 23-18. Two blocks from Williams, one each with Annalee Abell (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) and Johnson, and a service ace from Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) closed the Hoyas to within 23-21, but they could not get any closer as the Musketeers took the opening set 25-23. White and Johnson each had five kills in the opening set while Simpson led the defense with eight digs.

The second set belonged to Xavier from the beginning as the Musketeers jumped out to leads of 4-1 and 10-4. Two kills by Johnson and an ace from Gisolfi cut the deficit to 11-8, but Xavier opened things right back up with a 4-1 run to bring the score to 15-9. Despite two kills apiece from Williams and White, the Musketeers took the second set by a score of 25-16. White had another five kills in the frame while Simpson added another six digs.

Two more kills from White helped Georgetown take an early 3-1 lead in the third set. Xavier erased that with four consecutive points to take a 5-3 lead that eventually ballooned to 10-6. Kills by Abell and White cut the Hoyas' deficit to 10-8, but three straight points by the Musketeers gave them a five-point advantage again at 13-8. Georgetown put together a 3-0 run of its own, on a kill by Abell and a double block from Williams and Johnson, to pull within one at 17-16, but Xavier rattled off six consecutive points after that to take a commanding 23-16 lead. Two kill from Johnson was not enough to start a comeback as Xavier finished the sweep with a 25-19 win in set three. Abell, Johnson and White all had three kills to lead the offense in the third set while Simpson and Gisolfi each finished with six digs.

"Xavier played a really good match and showed why they sit in one of the top four spots in the conference," head coach Arlisa Williams said. "They did a good job distributing the ball to a variety of players so we had a difficult time stopping them. We came out and played well in the third set, but it was too late. Dani White again put up good numbers for us with 13 kills and hitting .400."

The Hoyas wrap up the regular season next weekend with a contest at Creighton on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
