Georgetown Hosts No. 10/11 Penn State on Sunday

Dec. 7, 2013

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team will host the No. 10/11 Penn State University Lady Lions on Sunday at McDonough Arena in a 2 p.m., matchup. The Lady Lions are the second ranked opponent of the season for the Blue & Gray. Georgetown is 5-2 on the year.

On Monday, senior co-captain Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. She was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout after averaging 19.5 ppg and 9.0 rpg in two Georgetown victories.

Georgetown defeated Nicholls State in the semifinals of the tournament, 67-55. Freshman center Natalie Butler (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) led the way with her fourth double-double of the season posting 17 points and 14 rebounds. She was named Player of the Game.

In the championship, Georgetown downed the Seawolves of the University of Alaska-Anchorage, 92-78. Four players scored in double figures for the Hoyas with White leading the way for her fourth-career double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

White was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after a pair of impressive performances. White, Butler and sophomore guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's-Ryken) were all named to the Great Alaska Shootout All-Tournament Team. Butler also made history as her 35 total rebounds over two games broke the previous tournament record of 29 set in 1980 and 2011.

The Hoyas defeated local-rival George Washington on Tuesday, 78-57, with five in double figures, Butler led the way with 17. White posted her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. McCormick had 15 going 3-of-7 from beyond the arc and freshman forward Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) managed 13 points, 9 rebounds and a 7-of-9 performance at the line. Rounding out the top scorers was senior co-captain Samisha Powell (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) with 12 points and four assists.

Butler is leading the squad in points and rebounds averaging a double-double with 16.4 ppg and 12.7 rpg. White is second with 14.1 ppg and 8.0 rpg and McCormick is averaging 12.6 ppg and a perfect 11-of-11 at the line.

No. 11/10 Penn State (5-2) was plagued by 22 turnovers and significant foul trouble among their starters as they dropped a 77-67 decision to No. 5/4 Notre Dame in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Ariel Edwards led the way with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. The senior guard/forward also added three rebounds and an assist.

The Hoyas are 1-4 all time against the Lady Lions and 0-1 at home. The lone victory came during the 1992-93 season when Georgetown won, 68-67, on the road in the NCAA Tournament. Last year, GU fell, 97-74, in State College, Pa. The previous two meetings were a home and home series from 2006 and 2007. GU fell in those contests 52-44 at home in 2006 and 56-47 on the road in 2007.

Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., at McDonough Arena. Live stats and a webcast featuring Ryan Sakamoto will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
