Final Stats

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team traveled to the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., on Thursdayday to battle a pair of BIG EAST foes in St. John's University and the University of South Florida. On Thursday, the Hoyas lost to the Red Storm, 4-3, before dropping a 7-0 decision to USF on Friday. Georgetown is 5-3 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST Conference play.

The Hoyas had not faced St. John's in the past two seasons, but battled for all three points.

In singles play, senior Vicky Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) and graduate student Liz Hamlin (Haverford, Pa./The Episcopal School) both won at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Red Storm. Sophomore Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) then battled to win the third set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, making the score3-3 as both squads knew it would come down to the doubles point.

The No. 2 doubles pair of Panarese and junior Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) lost, 8-6, and the duo of Sekely and junior Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Philips Exeter Academy) fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (9-7), as SJU took the match with the 4-3 decision.

The Hoyas had to rebound the following day face a nationally-ranked USF squad. The Bulls took each match in two sets as the Blue & Gray couldn't come back to fall, 7-0.

Georgetown will travel to Florida over Spring Break to Florida International and Nova Southeastern in its next two matches.
