WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team opened BIG EAST Conference play with a decisive 7-0 victory over the University of Connecticut Huskies on Friday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. The win was GU's first of BIG EAST Conference play as well as the first of the season for the Hoyas who are 1-5 overall.

In doubles play, the Hoyas picked up the point with wins on Courts 2 and 3. All three doubles pairs managed the 8-5 decision.

Singles play started well with quick wins by sophomore Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) by a score of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and freshman Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y.) at No. 2 taking the 6-1, 6-4 decision.

Sophomore Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) clinched the match at No. 6 defeating his opponent by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Georgetown Head Coach Gordie Ernst saw the match as a step for the team as it looks to gain momentum as the season unfolds.

"The tough losses against Penn, Toledo and Campbell prepared us well for our first BIG EAST match. The goal is to play highly competitive-matches before starting conference play and it paid off for us today."

The Blue & Gray will by back in action on Saturday to face the University of Richmond at Belle Haven County Club in Alexandria, Va.
