Final Stats
WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's women's tennis program earned a 4-3 victory over Florida International in Miami, Fla. on Tuesday, March 6. The Hoyas improved their overall record to 6-3.
Head Coach Gordie Ernst was elated with the team's effort in their first outdoor match of the season. "The conditions today were very difficult which made the win even more impressive. I am so proud of all the girls, especially Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy), who fought hard despite not feeling 100%, and senior Michelle Pratt (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), who won her first doubles match of the year."
Georgetown got off to a quick start, winning the doubles point. GU's second doubles team of Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) and Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Philips Exeter Academy) earned an 8-5 win and the third doubles duo of Panarese and Pratt won in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3).
The Blue and Gray found themselves down 3-1 early in singles competition but fought back with a win on court 5 from Graduate Student Elizabeth Hamlin (Haverford, Pa./The Episcopal School), 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. After Hamlin's three set victory the final two singles matches on court 4 and 6 were in the third set.
Sixth singles, Taylor Perz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland), won 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-0. GU's number four, Panarese, fought off three match points in the second set, and won 1-6, 7-6 (13-11), 6-2, securing the team win.
The Hoyas take the court next on Friday, March 8, against Nova Southeastern in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The match starts at 3 p.m.
