Georgetown Heavyweight Varsity Eight Retains Father Healy Cup

Princeton, NJ - Georgetown University Crew faced regular season rival Holy Cross on Lake Carnegie, in Princeton, NJ, this Saturday afternoon.

The race to retain the Healy Cup featured the Georgetown varsity eight of stroke Matt Stewart, Mike Blommer, Ben Holtzmuller, Henry Hoffstot, Graham Miller, Tim Broughton, Jack O'Donnell, bow James Nelson and coxswain Kerri McKie. They were in a tight battle in the first 500 meters, but Georgetown pulled away at the 750 meter mark and never looked back. GU finished in 5:56.9 with open water on Holy Cross who finished with a time of 6:13.7.

"I really felt like I could get after it during this race," noted freshman 4 seat Miller. "It's getting a little bit better every week so we are looking forward to the upcoming training."

In other racing, the GU second varsity eight raced the line-up of coxswain Nathaniel Liu, stroke Austin Bury, John Absher, Will Halle, Kyle Textor, Mike Hennessy, Charles DePentheny-O'Kelly, Lazar Zdravkovic, and bow Matt Mullman. They fought hard against Holy Cross in a tight battle for the first 1000 meters. Holy Cross was able to mount a charge in the third 500 to open up a length lead. Georgetown mounted a push in the last 500 meters but Holy Cross was able to hang on for the win 3.4 seconds ahead in a time of 6:13.7.

In the 3V race the GU line-up of Coxswain Bethany Biszko, Stroke Gar Ditz, John Haviland, Derek Boyse, Ray Dunn, James McDermott, Brian Hecht, Mike Lewers, and bow Westford Lang raced off the line and were together with their opponent in the opening meters of the race but Holy Cross moved early and took an open water lead. Georgetown didn't back down and raced to put a dent in their lead but Holy Cross was able to counter GU's move to finish 6.6 seconds ahead in a time of 6:27.4.

Georgetown also had an entry in the 4V event. The line-up of coxswain Ross Wasserman, Stroke Jay Tsai, Stephen Lim, Chris Sparacino, John Stopper, Dylan Cutler, Adam Orshefsky, Tomas Escalona, and bow Corso Rosati fought hard down the course but were bested by 23.6 second by the Crusaders in a time of 6:33.5.

Georgetown continues its racing on April 28th when they face George Washington and Rutgers at home on the Potomac in Washington, DC.
