Hoyas Football Falls to Brown, 45-7

Sept. 21, 2013

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Georgetown University football team (1-3, 0-0 Patriot League) finally broke-through the Brown (1-0, 0-0 Ivy League) defense late in the fourth quarter, as senior wide receiver Michael Cimilluca (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) scored his first career touchdown. Though, the damage had already been done, as GU fell to the Bears, 45-7 on Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium.

The Hoyas - who featured two first-time starters at linebacker, with leading tacklers Dustin Wharton and Nick Alfieri sitting for the second consecutive week - could not slow down the Bears, who rolled up 24 unanswered first half points. It wouldn't be until Cimilluca caught a 14-yard pass in the from Isaiah Kempf (Glendale, Calif./Bridgton Academy) with 28 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter

The first quarter was all Bears, as Brown opened its season with a nine-play, 93 yard drive. Patrick Donnelly found Alex Phelan in the back of the end zone to take an early 7-0 lead. After a GU punt, Brown converted a fourth down and four to keep a drive alive, leading to an Alex Norocea field goal to take a 10-0 lead. They converted another fourth down on the following drive, this time from nine yards, as Donnelly rushed down inside the Hoyas 10-yard line, before John Spooney rushed from eight yards out to put the Bears in front, 17-0 with 1:02 remaining in the first quarter.

Georgetown could not catch a break in the first quarter. Brandon Durham excited the Hoyas sideline with an apparent 80-yard kick-off return for a touchdown, but a holding penalty wiped the play out, giving GU field position deep in its own territory.

Twice in the second quarter, Kempf and the Hoyas drove into Brown territory, but an opportunistic Bears defense forced two turnovers, allowing Brown to take a 31-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Brown's Andrew Coke and Robert Grebenc each added a rushing touchdown to take a 45-0 lead with 4:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Senior Nick Campanella (Roselle, Ill./Montini Catholic) had 18 carries for 58 yards, while senior Daniel Sprotte (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) had three catches for 44 yards. Senior safety Stephen Atwater (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) had five tackles and one pass breakup in the loss.

The Hoyas will host Princeton on Homecoming Weekend on the Hilltop on Saturday, September 28, with the opening kick-off scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Fans can watch live coverage of the game on Georgetown University Athletics official website - www.guhoyas.com - with Matt Fetters, Brandon Small and Chuck Timanus calling the action.
