Georgetown Heads South to Take on Liberty

Sep 3, 2013

WASHINGTON - After a solid 2-1 weekend in the DC Challenge, the Georgetown women's volleyball team is set to square off in a nonconference showdown with Liberty on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Hoyas are looking to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Flames at McDonough Arena last year.

GU has seen great production from the experienced squad so far in 2013, especially out of the trio of Dani White, Alex Johnson and Lauren Saar. Together, White, Johnson and Saar have combined for 103 of the team's 133 kills. Freshman Caitlin Brauneis also had a fine three-match stretch at setter, totaling 112 assists (10.18/s) in her debut.

In the DC Challenge, both White and junior libero MacKenzie Simpson earned All-Tournament Team honors for their performances. In the middle, White, who also earned BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades, totaled 32 kills and a team-best 12 blocks. Simpson was stout on defense, leading the team with 47 digs.

Liberty comes into Tuesday 0-3 on the young season, but not without talent. Five Flames have totaled 10 digs or more, led by Lillie Happel with 23. Gabrielle Shipe holds a team-high 47 digs over nine sets played. The Flames have been swept in all three of their matches, but their opponents include No. 23 Ohio State, Northern Illinois and Green Bay.

Following the match with Liberty, Georgetown returns to the court on Friday in the Campbell Tournament in Buies Creek, N.C. The Hoyas will face the likes of host Campbell, Indiana State and North Carolina Central over Friday and Saturday.
