Oct. 15, 2014 Box Score WASHINGTON - The No. 3 Georgetown University men's soccer team (7-2-4, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) fell to the Providence College Friars (7-2-1, 2-0-1 BIG EAST), 2-0, on Wednesday in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field. The contest was moved up due the forecast of inclement weather in the Washington, D.C. region, but the time change did not help the Blue & Gray.
"The time made it tough because it took away what Shaw Field is, it was definitely the flattest performance of the year and you're thinking about things like the weather that have nothing to do with the game and suddenly you're down a goal in the first two minutes," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "A lot of credit to Providence, they did a really good job of executing exactly what they wanted to do."
The Friars took possession off of the kickoff and immediately attacked. Fabio Machado went down the left side just two minutes in and sent a high cross into the box. Mac Steeves got his head on it, heading it into the far post, and the rebound came right back to him. Steeves reset and fired right back in past GU keeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) to make it 1-0 in the second minute.
Almost 15 minutes in, the Hoyas had their first good looks as PC keeper Keasel Broome was forced to stop balls from Georgetown forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) off of his left foot and another by senior midfielder Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood).
A foul resulted in a free kick that went to the back post and the head of junior defender Josh Turnley (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) who had a good look in, but Broome came up with an athletic save. Ten minutes later, Turnley had another shot off of a setpiece as his shot from the middle of the box hit the crossbar.
The Friars answered with a flurry of shots forcing Gomez to make stops and the backline coming up with some big blocks.
Providence added another before the break on a counter attack in the 38th minute. Dominik Machado sent a ball through the defense springing Markus Naglestad who had a perfect finish on the left side to make it 2-0.
Late in the half, the Hoyas continued to have chances including a ball across the face of the goal that went untouched, but couldn't find the back of the net to make it 2-0 going into the break.
The second half was quiet for both teams as Providence packed it in on defense and allowed Georgetown to posess without many dangerous looks. GU had five corners in the second half, but none really challenged the defense.
As the clock wound down, the Hoyas finally had a good look as sophomore midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) had a shot from close range that looked to have Broome beat. Broome made an incredible kick save to secure the shutout 2-0 decision.
The Hoyas outshot the Friars, 12-11, and took 13 corner kicks to PC's one. Broome was awarded the victory in the net with seven saves, while Gomez took the loss with one save in the contest.
The Hoyas will head out on the road to take on the Seton Hall University Pirates on Saturday at 1 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available through the Pirates' athletic website.
