WASHINGTON - Senior Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) reached the milestone of 1,000 career kills, but the Georgetown volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-13) to Marquette on Friday night in a BIG EAST volleyball contest. The match was played at Marquette's Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee.
Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) led the Hoyas with 10 kills and a .280 hitting percentage. Johnson finished with seven kills and nine digs. Caitlin Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) had 19 assists while MacKenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) finished with 13 digs.
Georgeown (6-11, 0-4 BIG EAST) fell behind early in the first set, 7-2, but cut the deficit to 13-10 behind two kills from White, one each from Johnson and Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) and a block by Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) and Terese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy). Marquette (12-3, 3-0 BIG EAST) ran away with the set with a 10-4 run, eventually taking a 1-0 lead with a 25-18 win in the opening set.
The second set was tied at six before the Golden Eagles used a 5-1 run to open an 11-7 advantage. The Hoyas got within two, at 11-9, but could not get any closer as Marquette took the set, 25-15.
Two kills by White kept Georgetown within two at 6-4 in the third set but, with the Hoyas trailing 8-5, Marquette used a 15-5 run to take a 23-10 lead, eventually winning the set 25-13.
