Oct. 4, 2014

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Three Hoyas finished with double figures in kills as the Georgetown volleyball team snapped an eight-match losing streak with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-15) win at DePaul on Saturday night in a BIG EAST Conference matchup.

Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) led the way with a match-high 14 kills while completing the double-double with 10 digs and also adding three service aces. Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) finished with 13 kills and five blocks and Terese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) contributed 10 kills. Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) had a career-high four aces while Caitlin Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) had 38 assists. MacKenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) led all players in the match with 15 digs. The Hoyas had nine aces as a team and hit at a .333 clip for the match.

Georgeown (7-11, 1-4 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 10-2 lead right away in the first set behind three kills by Williams, one apiece from Cannon, Brauneis and Johnson and an ace by Saar. Williams also added two blocks, teaming once each with Shannon Ellis (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) and Johnson. DePaul (3-13, 1-3 BIG EAST) cut the lead to 15-10, but the Hoyas scored seven of the next nine points, on two kills from both Williams and Cannon and back-to-back aces by Saar, to take a 22-12 lead. A kill from Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) won the set, 25-14, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Demons scored four of the first five points in the second set to take a 4-1 lead, but the Hoyas responded with a 4-0 run to jump ahead, 5-4. Cannon and Brauneis led the comeback with single kills. The set remained a one-point affair until, tied at 21, GU rattled off three-consecutive point - on a DePaul error, a kill from Johnson and a service ace by Brauneis - to take a 24-21 lead. After DePaul held off a couple of set points, Williams gave the Hoyas a 2-0 lead in the match with a kill.

Georgetown came out on fire in the third set, taking a quick 15-4 lead. Cannon started the charge with consecutive kills and finished with four in the run while also teaming up with Williams for a block. White had two kills, Williams added another while Simpson had a service ace and Johnson had three aces in a span of four points. The Hoyas maintained a lead of at least eight points the rest of the way as Johnson finished off the match with her 14th kill.

"We played a solid game of volleyball from beginning to end," Georgetown Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "I am very proud of our entire team. We look forward to building on this win as the season continues."

GU will continue its road trip next weekend with matches at Villanova (Friday, October 10, 7 p.m.) and Seton Hall (Saturday, October, 11, 7 p.m.).
