Oct. 6, 2014 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore defender
Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, while senior goalkeeper
Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) received a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Rolls the No. 7 men's soccer team went 1-0-1 last week.
Yaro helped the Hoyas to a pair of shutouts on the week. In the non-conference finale, Yaro marked Hermann Trophy-candidate Dan Metzger as the Hoyas downed the University of Maryland, 1-0, in College Park, Md., on Tuesday evening. On Saturday, Georgetown and No. 12 Marquette University played to a scoreless, double-overtime tie at Shaw Field. Yaro spent a majority of the game battling Hermann candidate and his former teammate, C. Nortey.
This is Yaro's second-career weekly honor and the Hoyas' third Defensive Player of the Week award this season including the second in as many weeks.
Gomez added two more shutouts on the season to total six for 2014. He tallied two saves at Maryland and managed four saves including some key stops late in the tie against Marquette in BIG EAST Conference play. Gomez currently has 29 saves on the season.
This is Gomez's ninth-career nod to the weekly honor roll and his second of the 2014 season.
