Georgetown Sailing Wins ICSA Match Racing National Championship

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University sailing team won the 2014 Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Match Racing National Championship over the weekend as the top 10 teams in the country gathered for three days of racing in Oyster Bay, N.Y. Utilizing the same roster, the Hoyas successfully defended their national title from 2013 to tally the 11th national championship in program history.

The first round consisted of a round robin among all teams. The Blue & Gray went 7-2 and were tabbed the No. 2 seed for the remaining races at the end of the day.

Day two action at the ICSA Match Race Championships began with Flight 1 of repechage. The day would end with the top two teams advancing to the quarterfinals. The University of South Florida team, leading after the first day, watched the repechage with interest from deck of Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Oyster Bay. The view was perfect, with the weather mark only 100 yards off the dock.

There was celebration from the Charleston and Stanford teams as they each advanced from the repechage to the quarterfinals. South Florida beat Stanford, Georgetown beat Charleston, St Mary's beat Wisconsin, Boston College beat Yale, Washington beat Texas A&M.

Going into the third day, eliminated teams were Charleston, Yale, Wisconsin, Stanford, University of Washington and Texas AM Galveston. In the petit finals were Boston College and St. Mary's College of Maryland, the finals were Georgetown versus USF.

The petit finals were run with Boston College racing against St. Mary's College. The Eagles and Seahawks were tied up with one win apiece and one race to go to determine third place in the championship. St. Mary's got the win, taking third, and Boston College finished fourth overall.

Battling for first place were Georgetown and USF on Sunday in a best-of-five race series with the first team to get to three points taking the trophy. Weather on Oyster Bay was cloudy with a high near 48, with winds from the southwest at 7-10 knots. The Hoyas won the first race of the match. The Bulls took the second race, was leading at the start of race three, led through the gate and en route to a win in the third race. Georgetown won race four, tying up the scores to force a fifth race.

After the start of race five, South Florida was ahead on the first cross and led at the first mark. GU was able to pass USF on leg two. Georgetown won the last race handily and was crowned champion, the 11th national title in the program's storied history.
