WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament on Monday afternoon. The team received the eighth overall seed in the tournament of 48 where the top 16 teams are seeded and receive a first-round bye. This marks the squad's fourth tournament berth in the past five seasons.
The Hoyas are 12-4-2 on the season and finished with a mark of 6-2-1 in the BIG EAST to earn the third seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. Georgetown defeated Marquette University, 2-1, in the quarterfinal, but fell to eventual champ Xavier by a score of 1-0 at PPL Park on Friday.
The Blue & Gray has been in the national polls for the entire season. Last week, the team was No. 8 in the NSCAA poll, No. 9 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's poll and No. 5 in the NCAA's last RPI.
The Hoyas have received a number of accolades this season with the squad earning two of the BIG EAST's top awards.
Sophomore defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year. Yaro and junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) were both unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST honorees, while seniors Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves), along with junior Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and sophomore Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) were selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Basuljevic and classmate Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) earned spots on the BIG EAST All-Rookie Squad.
Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the fourth under Wiese. The Hoyas have been to the tournament on five previous occasions. Last season, Georgetown fell in the Sweet 16 to Michigan State, 1-0. In 2012, the squad was the national runner up falling to Indiana, 1-0, in the national championship game. Prior to that season, the program had never moved beyond the second round of the tournament with previous appearances in 2010, 1997 and 1994. The Hoyas are 6-4-2 overall in the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue & Gray will play the winner of Old Dominion University and St. Francis College Brooklyn. Georgetown is 2-3 all-time against Old Dominion after defeating the Monarchs, 3-0, in the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament and has never faced the Terriers.
The BIG EAST had an impressive four teams receive a bid and three earned seeding with Georgetown at eight, Providence at No. 11 and Creighton at No. 12.
