No. 11 Men's Soccer Closes Regular Season at Villanova

Nov. 6, 2014

WASHINGTON - The No. 11 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will close out regular season play against Villanova University (8-6-3, 3-3-2 BIG EAST) on Friday afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex at 2 p.m. The Hoyas are currently 10-3-4 on the season and 5-2-1 in BIG EAST Conference play with tournament seeding on the line.

Georgetown has clinched a spot and home-field advantage in the BIG EAST Tournament. Depending on the outcome of Friday's game and the Xavier/Butler contest, the Hoyas will either host an opponent on Tuesday at Shaw Field or earn a bye to the tournament semifinals played at PPL Park.

On Monday, senior defender Jared Rist (Durham, N.C./Riverside) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) received a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

Rist played a key role on defense in Georgetown's two victories last week. He saw action in the 1-0 overtime win against No. 9 Xavier on Wednesday with one shot to his credit. In the 1-0 victory over St. John's on Saturday, Rist assisted on the game winner with a brilliant pass into the box to give the Blue & Gray the victory as well as the shutout.

It was Rist's second-career weekly honor, with the first coming earlier this season, and the Hoyas' sixth Defensive Player of the Week award this year. It was also the fifth time in the last six weeks that a Georgetown player earned this honor.

Gomez added two more shutouts on the season to total 10 for 2014. He played all 186 minutes for the Hoyas in a pair of wins for the Blue & Gray. In the Xavier win, Gomez managed three saves, including some big ones down the stretch. In the victory over St. John's he posted two saves on the afternoon.

It was Gomez's 10th-career nod to the weekly honor roll and his third of the 2014 season.

Junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) leads the team and the conference in scoring with 22 points on 10 goals and two assists. Sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) is second on the team with 10 points and a league-best six assists, while freshman Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and sophomore midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) are third with six points on three goals. Gomez has 10 shutouts on the season and has tallied 43 saves so far this year.

The Wildcats are coming off of a tough 3-0 loss at Xavier last weekend. Villanova had won its previous two contests with a 2-0 victory over St. John's and a 1-0 win against Butler. VU is led by Aaron Dennis with six goals and two assists for 14 points on the season. Goalkeeper Will Steiner has seven shutouts on the season with 77 saves to his credit.

Georgetown is 22-12-5 in the all-time series against the Wildcats. Last season, the Hoyas won, 1-0, at Shaw Field on a goal by Allen. In the last meeting in Pennsylvania, Georgetown won by a score of 2-0 during the 2011 season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available through the Wildcats' athletic website.
