Georgetown Sailing Opens Spring Season with Two Regattas

March 5, 2014

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University sailing team opened the spring season with two events in the Bob Bavier Team Race at the College of Charleston as well as Georgetown Team Race on the friendly waters of the Potomac River. The Hoyas took third place in Charleston and finished fourth at the home.

The first team race intersectional of the spring featured many of the top teams in the country. It was evident from the start that some teams have been practicing and others have been iced out in the long winter.

The Hoyas have been on the water since Feb. 1 and despite some initial rustiness they came prepared and sailed well. The regatta had a double round robin followed by a final four round robin. The Hoyas went 7-2 in round one and then struggled a bit in the second round, going 5-4.

The Hoyas made the final four with Yale, Stanford and Charleston and won all three races. Beating the top three teams consecutively is no easy feat and Georgetown left the regatta feeling confident about their abilities and their chances to continue the tradition of excellence that the Hoyas have come to expect in the postseason.
