Georgetown Rowing 2014 Summer Update

July 1, 2014

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University rowing program has seen some of its alums as well as a current student athlete enjoy recent success on the national and international stage over the past few months.

Victoria Stulgis (C'11), who spent her athletic career on the Hilltop as coxswain for both the men's and women's squads, has had a bevy of coxing success over the past eight months. This past fall, she coxed the Georgetown Men's Alumni Eight to an unprecedented win this fall at the Head of the Charles in Boston. Stulgis followed that up this June with a win as coxswain for University of East London's (UEL) Senior Four at the prestigious Women's Henley Regatta. The Henley win was a first for UEL, finishing ahead of 17 other teams in a time of 5:23.

"It is always great to jump back into the coxing seat and even better when you can join a fast crew," Stulgis said. "The UEL women's four had put in some fast times throughout the year, and I was thrilled to be a part of that success with the win at Women's Henley. This was my first time racing at Women's Henley, so it was thrilling to win. We had some great races, and I am so proud of my crew mates."

Another former Hoya coxswain, Jack Carlson (C'09) is also in the news as he joins fellow alumnus Henry Hoffstot (C'12), who stroked this year's Cambridge blue boat, on the U.S. National Team. The two GU alums qualified to represent the U.S. by winning the trials for the men's pair with coxswain in June, while competing for Penn AC. They will compete at the 2014 World Championships in Amsterdam, Aug. 24-31.

"We are thrilled to be going to the World Championships in Amsterdam and representing the USA," said Carlson. "It is also very cool to have two-thirds of this boat being former Hoyas."

Carlson, who is also currently the head coach at Oriel College Boat Club, in Oxford, England, has recently authored a well-received coffee table book, Rowing Blazers, which celebrates jackets worn around British boathouses and traditionally at the Henley Royal Regatta on Thames. It can be pre-ordered for USA customers.

Rising junior Graham Miller (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) is still at selection camp for the Under 23 National Team. Miller has been training hard with some of the best collegiate oarsmen in the country in Oakland, Calif. since June 7. He has made it through the first round of cuts and continues to work in hopes of competing in one of the team boats being assembled at the camp. The camp will send the USA U23 eight and straight four boats to the U23 World Championships to be held July 23-27 in Varese, Italy.

"It's hard to put into words what this experience has meant to me so far," Miller said. "Both my mental and physical abilities are being tested without boundaries. Rowing with the nation's top athletes has further augmented my appreciation for the sport and really helped me witness its sublimity".
