Sept. 10, 2014 WASHINGTON - The No. 6 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are currently 2-0-2 on the season playing a tough slate including the then top-ranked team in the nation.
On Monday, junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's) earned weekly honors as he helped the squad to a 2-0 week.
Allen was named to the honor roll after totaling four points on a goal and two assists in Sunday's 4-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin. He tallied six shots in the game and eight for the week playing a significant role in GU's 2-0 win against Harvard University in the home opener.
It was Allen's first nod to the honor roll this season and the second of his career. It marked Georgetown's second honor roll award of 2014.
Allen leads the team in scoring with six points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) is second on the team with five points (2 G, 1 A) while junior forward Melvin Snoh (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) has tallied one goal and one assist for three points. Senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) has two shutouts on the season and has tallied 15 saves so far this year.
The Rams are 2-2-0 on the season and recently fell to No. 5 North Carolina, 1-0. After an evenly matched first half, UNC broke through the Ram defense in the 57th minute to score the game's only goal. VCU was the runner-up in the 39th Stihl Soccer Classic, with three Rams making the all-tournament team: Kharlton Belmar, Mario Herrera Meraz, Juan Fajardo Ortiz.
Georgetown is 2-2 all-time against the Rams. The last meeting was a 1-0 overtime loss at Shaw Field during the 2011 season in GU's home opener. Both wins came away from home, one in 1997 in the NCAA Tournament and the other in 2005.
Thursday is the third contest in a four-game homestand for the Blue & Gray. Live stats as well as a webcast featuring Ben Gordon-Goldstein and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
