No. 6 Hoyas Fall to VCU in Overtime

Sept. 11, 2014

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The No. 6 Georgetown University men's soccer team suffered a tough loss to the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams (3-2-0), 2-1, in overtime Thursday evening at Shaw Field. The Hoyas had opportunities, but couldn't find a way and fall to 2-1-2 overall.

"It was a hard game and a lot of credit goes to VCU since they're athletic and they have guys who make plays and put them in a position to win," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "We'll look at it and rue some chances, we had a lot of open nets that we missed, but we'll learn from it and move forward."

The Hoyas dominated possession in the opening half. The best chance of the half came just 11 minutes in when a long cross went to junior forward Melvin Snoh (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) on the left side. Snoh had keeper Garrett Cyprus beat, but shot high to keep it scoreless.

The teams went into the half scoreless.

Georgetown had another chance early in the second as senior midfielder Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood) hit classmate Austin Martz (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) with a pass and Martz crossed it in front of the net. He found sophomore midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) who was once again just off.

GU's goal came in the 50th minute when Martz made a long diagonal run to junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) who had the ball caught under his feet. Martz recovered the ball and knocked it back to Allen who shot through traffic to make it 1-0.

As the time ticked down, VCU found reserve energy as the Rams began to possess more and looked dangerous. The tying goal came in the 79th minute as Devon Fisher hit a long shot from the top corner of the box.

Neither squad could find the game winner in regulation, forcing the sudden victory over time period. VCU had chances in OT and the winning goal came in the 100th minute when Jose Manel broke free and forced Georgetown keeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) off his line then shooting to the top right corner to make it 2-1.

The Hoyas outshot the Rams, 18-14, and took five corner kicks to the Rams' two. Gomez tallied one save in the net, while Cyprus managed five and received the victory.

Georgetown will host No. 9 UC-Irvine in the final contest of a four-game homestand at Shaw Field on Sunday afternoon at noon. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available through GUHoyas.com.
