Sept. 20, 2014 WASHINGTON - The No. 13 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the College of William & Mary Tribe (2-4) on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are currently 3-1-3 on the season coming off a win on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, the Hoyas defeated the Princeton University Tigers in New Jersey by a score of 3-1. The Tigers scored first, but Georgetown managed three second-half goals to get the victory. Junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) scored the first goal in the 61st minute and senior midfielder Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood) added the game winner two minutes later. Senior midfielder Austin Martz (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) finished off the game with his first intercollegiate goal in the 78th minute.
On Monday, Allen earned weekly honors as he helped the then-No. 6 Georgetown University men's soccer squad to a 0-1-1 week against two tough opponents. It was the second-consecutive week that Allen has been recognized by the conference.
Allen was named to the honor roll after scoring a pair of goals on the week. In the 2-1 overtime loss to Virginia Commonwealth University, Allen scored GU's lone goal in the 50th minute. The Rams eventually tied it to send it into extra time. On Sunday, Allen scored in the 33rd minute against the then-No. 9 UC Irvine Anteaters. The Hoyas and Anteaters tied, 1-1, after 110 minutes of soccer.
Allen leads the team in scoring with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) is second on the team with seven points (2 G, 3 A) while Rudy and Martz are both tied for third with four points apiece. Senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) has two shutouts on the season and has tallied 20 saves so far this year.
William & Mary is looking to get back into the win column following a tough 2-0 loss against No. 1 North Carolina on Tuesday night. Senior goalkeeper Bennett Jones set a season high with six saves in the match, but the Tribe couldn't overcome a pair of first half goals by UNC.
Senior Chris Albiston and sophomore Reilly Maw each have seven points (3 G, 1A). Seniors Michael Teiman and Zachary Montebell have also tallied goals for the Tribe this season. Jones has played every match for the Green and Gold in goal, posting a 1.20 GAA with 17 saves and a shutout. The Tribe was selected to finish third in the Preseason CAA Poll.
Georgetown is 2-4 all-time against the Tribe winning the last meeting, 3-1, in 2000 at the Old Dominion Tournament. The Hoyas are 1-2 at home against the Tribe last playing on the Hilltop during the 1994 season as GU managed a 4-3 victory. In six games in the series, the teams have combined for an impressive 25 goals between them.
Kickoff at Shaw Field is scheduled for 4 p.m. Live stats as well as a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
The Hoyas will be holding another youth soccer promotional day on Sunday. All kids who wear their youth soccer jerseys will be able to get into the match for free.
