Sept. 23, 2014 Final Stats
WASHINGTON - Georgetown could not catch up after Creighton got off to a fast start, falling to the Bluejays 3-0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-22) on Tuesday evening at McDonough Arena. The match was the BIG EAST opener for both teams.
Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) led the Hoyas with six kills and two blocks. Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) had five kills and Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) added four. MacKenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) led the defense with 10 digs.
Creighton (8-6, 1-0 BIG EAST) scored eight of the first nine points to take control early in the first set. Georgetown (6-8, 0-1 BIG EAST) could only muster kills from White and Riggins as the Bluejays took the opening set 25-7.
The Hoyas jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the second set on kills from Brauneis and Riggins along with two Creighton errors. The Bluejays responded immediately with an 8-1 run to move ahead, 10-5. Down 16-7, back-to-back kills from White and Williams and a service ace by Saar cut the deficit to 16-10. GU could not get any closer however, as Creighton took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 set win.
The Blue & Gray came out fast in the third set, staking themselves to a 6-2 lead. White and Johnson led the opening charge with single kills each and four Creighton errors. GU maintained the lead, with a kill by Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) giving the Hoyas a 15-13 lead. The Bluejays responded by scoring five-straight points to take an 18-15 advantage. A kill by Williams and three Creighton errors tied the score at 19, and a dual block by Johnson and White gave the Hoyas a 20-19 lead. However, the Bluejays scored six of the final eight points to win the set 25-22 and sweep the match.
"We did not play inspired volleyball at the start," Georgetown Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "I like the way we came out of the locker room in the third set. We were much hungrier and had a better mentality than we had in the first two. Moving forward, we need to come out fast and strong at the beginning of the match, like we did in the third set."
Georgetown will continue its homestand with a pair of BIG EAST contests this weekend. The Hoyas will host Xavier on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on Butler at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches will be played in McDonough Arena.
