WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University Women's tennis team began fall play on Tuesday, Sept. 23, when the Hoyas took on the UDC Firebirds at the UDC Tennis Facility and swept both singles and doubles play for a win 9-0.
Sophia Barnard (Mill Neck, N.Y./Portledge School), playing in the No. 2 spot, defeated UDC's Peerada Looareesuwan 6-3 in the first set and went up 1-0 in the second before Looareesuwan retired.
Newcomers Daphne de Chatellus (Tiburon, Calif./Redwood) and Casey Marx (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) recorded their first victories as Hoyas handily winning their respective matches. Marx downed Alicia Gallard 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot while de Chatellus, playing in the No. 4 slot, defeated Laura Rojas 6-0, 6-0.
Victoire Saperstein (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School), playing in the lead match, defeated Maxime Duijst 6-2, 6-0.
The squad's lone senior Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) won 6-3, 6-3 against Laura Dimante in the No.3 match.
In doubles play, Saperstein and Koenen defeated Duijst and Dimante 8-2 in the top position, while Panarese partnered with Marx, at No. 2 in doubles, to take down Gallard and Looareesuwan 8-1.
The Blue & Gray will travel to Annapolis, Md., in two weeks to participate in the Navy Blue/Gold Invitational Oct. 10-12
