Hoyas Continue Homestand with Weekend Matches Against Xavier, Butler

WASHINGTON - Georgetown continues its three-match homestand this weekend with a pair of BIG EAST volleyball matches. The Hoyas will play host to Xavier on Friday night at 7 p.m. before welcoming Butler to the Hilltop on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played in McDonough Arena.

The Blue & Gray (6-8, 0-1 BIG EAST) are coming off of a tough 3-0 loss to Creighton on Tuesday evening in the BIG EAST opener. Dani White(Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) led the Hoyas with six kills and two blocks. Alex Johnson(Tampa, Fla./Plant) had five kills and MacKenzie Simpson(Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) led the defense with 10 digs

Georgetown is led offensively by freshmanTerese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy), who is averaging 2.78 kills per set. White averages 2.60 kills per set and leads the Hoyas with 16 service aces and 1.12 blocks per set. Her aces and blocks per set rank third and seventh in the BIG EAST, respectively. Sophomore Caitlin Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) ranks fourth in the BIG EAST with 9.35 assists per set while Simpson is fifth in digs per set, averaging 4.33.

Xavier enters the weekend with a 7-5 record and Friday will be the Musketeers' first BIG EAST match. Abbey Bessler leads Xavier with 173 kills, an average of 3.60 per set. Alex Blair and Aubree Smith rank second and third in the BIG EAST with hitting percentages of .373 and .357, respectively. Jesse Earl leads the Musketeers with 4.17 digs per set.

Butler owns an 8-4 record and will play at Creighton on Friday evening to open its BIG EAST schedule. The Bulldogs are led by Belle Obert, who ranks fourth in the conference with 3.91 kills per set. She is also second on the team in blocks, with 1.11 per set, and third in digs, with 2.33 per set. Kayla Bivins leads the entire BIG EAST with 1.55 blocks per set and Makayla Ferguson is second with 10.62 assists per set.

Following this weekend's matches, GU will head out on the road for four-straight matches. The Hoyas will open the month of October at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 3 at Marquette. The road trip will also feature matches at DePaul (Saturday, October 4, 8 p.m.), Villanova (Friday, October 10, 7 p.m.) and Seton Hall (Saturday, October, 11, 7 p.m.).
