Sept. 26, 2014 WASHINGTON - The No. 11 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will open BIG EAST Conference play at Butler University (4-2-3) on Saturday evening at the Butler Bowl at 5:30 p.m. ET. The Hoyas are currently 4-1-3 on the season with one non-conference game remaining on the schedule.
On Monday, sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) earned weekly honors as he helped the Hoyas to a 2-0 week against a pair of non-conference opponents. Muyl was named to the Honor Roll after tallying three assists for the week. In a 3-1 victory at Princeton University on ESPNU, the sophomore managed two helpers. In a 1-0 shutout over the College of William & Mary on Sunday, Muyl assisted on the game winner.
It was Muyl's first nod to the honor roll this season and the second of his career. It marked Georgetown's fourth honor roll award of 2014.
Junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) leads the team in scoring with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Muyl is second on the team with eight points (2 G, 4 A) while senior midfielder Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood), freshman midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and senior midfielder Austin Martz (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) are tied for third with four points apiece. Senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) has three shutouts on the season and has tallied 22 saves so far this year.
A header from senior defender Brandon Fricke in overtime put a dramatic end to a 2-1 Butler victory in a physical matchup with Evansville at the Butler Bowl on Wednesday. Coming out of regulation tied 1-1, the Bulldogs struck early in the overtime period. A corner kick from junior forward Jeff Adkins found Fricke and he headed it into the right side of the goal after just one minute of play. The game-winner was the first goal of the season for Fricke.
In the final non-conference match of the year, the Bulldogs posted a season-high 22 shots and placing 11 on goal.
Georgetown is 1-0 all-time against the Bulldogs with the first meeting coming a season ago on October 19 as GU won 4-1 at Shaw Field. Steve Neumann scored two goals and tallied an assist, while Muyl added a goal and an assist including the game winner.
