No. 11 Hoyas Prepare for Maryland on Tuesday

Sept. 29, 2014 WASHINGTON - The No. 11 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will close out non-conference play at the University of Maryland (3-3-2) on Tuesday evening at Ludwig Field at 7 p.m. The Hoyas are currently 5-1-3 and downed Butler in the BIG EAST opener on Saturday.

On Monday, senior defender Jared Rist (Durham, N.C./Riverside) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) received the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Allen scored both goals in the GU's 2-0 victory at Butler University on Saturday. The junior connected a penalty kick in the 79th minute for the game winner and added an insurance goal in the 89th minute to improve the Hoyas to 5-1-3 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.

Rist made a huge impact on the backline starting in just his second-career game and the first of the 2014 campaign. The senior blocked a shot behind the keeper to secure the shutout late in the win at Butler. He also passed the through ball for Allen that would result in the game-winning penalty kick. Rist and the defense allowed just two Bulldog shots on goal and none in the first half.

Allen leads the team and the conference in scoring with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) is second on the team with nine points and a league-best five assists, while senior midfielder Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood), freshman midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and senior midfielder Austin Martz (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) are tied for third with four points apiece. Senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) has four shutouts on the season and has tallied 23 saves so far this year.

Maryland picked up its first win as a member of the Big Ten Conference with a 2-0 shutout victory against Wisconsin last Friday night at Ludwig Field. UMD outshot Wisconsin 14-4 on the night, dominating possession for the majority of the match. The Terps also held a stout 9-2 corner kick advantage. The Terps picked up goals from sophomore Michael Sauers and senior Dan Metzger early in the second half.

Georgetown is 0-28-1 all-time against Maryland, but the last meeting was one for the ages. In the 2012 College Cup semifinals, the squads tied 4-4 before the Blue & Gray advanced in penalty kicks, 4-3. Steve Neumann had a hat trick, while Allen added a goal for the high-scoring affair. Gomez also came through with final save during the penalty kicks to send the Hoyas to the national championship game.

Tuesday's kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., at Ludwig Field.

Live stats will be available through the Terps' athletic website and audio will be available for College Sports Live subscribers through www.GUHoyas.com. Dan Helfrich will be calling the action with Tom Greaser on color.

The game will also be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network 2 Go as part of the Big Ten Network Plus package. Fans can access a single-school pass on BTN Plus for a $9.95 monthly subscription.
