Hoyas Set for Crowne Plaza Philadelphia Invitational

Sept. 4, 2014

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball team will look to carry momentum from its opening weekend when the Hoyas travel to the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. GU's three matches, against Cleveland State, Colgate and Penn, will be played at the historic Palestra.

Georgetown opens the weekend on Friday afternoon against Cleveland State at 4 p.m. The Hoyas will return to the court on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Colgate before wrapping up against Penn at 7:30 p.m. Live stats for all matches can be found HERE and the match versus Penn will be streamed live for free on the Ivy League Digital Network.

GU opened the 2014 season last weekend at the D.C. Challenge, finishing with a 2-1 record. The Hoyas fell on the road in straight sets to No. 24 American on Friday night before rebounding Saturday with wins over George Mason (3-1) and Howard (3-0). Junior co-captain Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) and freshman Terese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lord of Mercy) were both named to the all-tournament team.

Saar led the offense with 32 kills and 38 digs, averaging 3.2 kills per set and 3.8 digs per set, earning a selection to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Cannon added 24 kills in her first weekend of collegiate action while Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) had 22 kills and 12 total blocks. Caitlin Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) put together three double-double efforts over the weekend, totaling 88 assists and 32 digs. Senior co-captain MacKenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) led the defense with 54 digs.

Cleveland State comes into the weekend with a 2-2 record, having won its past two matches in straight sets over Tennessee Tech and Akron. The Vikings are led by Alex Middlebrooks and Grace Kauth who are both averaging 2.77 kills per set. Dayna Roberts has 70 digs in four matches, a 5.38 digs per set average.

Colgate enters with a 1-0 record after defeating Niagara last Friday by a 3-2 score. Diane Seely led the Raiders with 17 kills in their first match while Kathleen Harris added 13.

Penn has not played a match yet this season, but is coming off a 14-11 campaign in 2013 when they finished third in the Ivy League with an 8-6 conference record. The Quakers return their second-best offensive player in Jasmine DeSilva, who averaged 2.28 kills per set last season.

Following this weekend's play, Georgetown will play its home-opener on Tuesday, September 9 against Liberty. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at McDonough Arena.
