No. 9 Hoyas Open at Home with Harvard and Wisconsin

Sept. 4, 2014

WASHINGTON - The No. 9 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host two opponents in its home opening weekend at Shaw Field. The Hoyas welcome Harvard University on Friday before a matchup with the University of Wisconsin on Sunday.

Last weekend Georgetown began the 2014 campaign with a pair of ties at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic to start the year with a mark of 0-0-2. The Blue & Gray tied Indiana University on Friday, 1-1, and played to a scoreless draw with the then-No. 1 University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sunday.

On Monday, sophomore defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week as the BIG EAST Conference released its first men's soccer weekly honors of the 2014 season. Additionally, senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) earned a spot on the weekly honor roll.

Last year the Hoyas were 14-5-2 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 before falling to Michigan State. The Blue & Gray return some of its top scorers in 2014. Junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's) led the way with 11 goals and five assists for 27 points. Sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) is also returning after scoring four goals with a team-high nine assists for 17 points.

Allen and Yaro were named to the 2014 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Last weekend, Muyl and Yaro were both named to the all-tournament team.

Friday will be the season opener for the Crimson. The squad was 7-8-2 overall last season. This will be the first meeting between the squads.

Freshman forward Mark Segbers scored his first two career goals and Wisconsin racked up four scores in just over 27 minutes of the second half to run past Xavier with a 4-0 win Sunday night. The Badgers are 1-1 with a season-opening 2-1 loss to the University of San Francisco.

The Hoyas are 0-1-1 all-time against the Badgers. The first meeting was a 5-0 loss during the 1995 season at the Wisconsin Tournament. The only meeting under Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese was a 1-1 double overtime tie in 2012 in Madison, Wis.

Friday begins a four-game homestand for the Blue & Gray. Live stats as well as a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Nick Van Hollen will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
