WASHINGTON - The No. 9 Georgetown University men's soccer team won its 2014 home opener on Friday with a 2-0 shutout over the Harvard University Crimson (0-1-0) at Shaw Field in front of a capacity crowd. It marked GU's first win of the season moving the Blue & Gray to 1-0-2 on the year.
"Harvard was very organized and they were trying to keep it tight on setpieces, and we have to be better, keeping the ball and waiting for spaces to open up," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "It was the home opener for us and the opening game for them and we were running around in a sauna so that made it hard and I think the guys are frustrated that they didn't handle some things better. But they need to realize that a 2-0 win over a good Harvard team is a good result and we'll be very happy with that when we wake up tomorrow morning."
The Hoyas controlled the pace early on as the Harvard defense packed it in generating traffic in front of the net. The first goal of the game came in the 12th minute from senior midfielder Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood). Sophomore midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) staged a one-two at the top of the box and Rudy hit a low ball into the right corner of the goal with his right foot to make it 1-0.
The Blue & Gray continued to fire away maintaining offensive possession for much of the half, but the Crimson defense was able to block every attempt as Georgetown went into the break leading 1-0.
It was Harvard that managed to gain momentum in the second half as the 90 degree heat began to get to the Hoyas forcing a number of substitutions. The Crimson started to find space to attack and was pressing for the equalizer.
Despite Harvard's advances, the Hoyas did find opportunities to shoot including one series that ended with a header by sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) being cleared off the line.
The Hoya defense stood strong as senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) stepped up down the stretch to come up with some big saves.
In the 86th minute, breathing room came off the foot of midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) from senior midfielder Tom Skelly (Albuquerque, N.M./Shattuck-St. Mary's). The freshman had a good touch to get past his defender and giving him a wide open lane on the left side of the field. Basuljevic fired to the far corner as keeper Evan Mendez sprawled out, but the ball was out of reach giving the Hoyas the 2-0 lead and marking Basuljevic's first intercollegiate goal.
From that point on the Blue & Gray managed possession to come away with the 2-0 victory and the team's second shutout of the season.
Georgetown outshot Harvard, 21-8, and took five corner kicks to the Crimson's three. Gomez was awarded the win with three saves, while Mendez also had three saves in the net.
The Hoyas will continue their homestand on Sunday as the team hosts the University of Wisconsin Badgers at 1 p.m., at Shaw Field. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Following the game, there will be an autograph session on the field.
